It starts with materials collected from the landscape. Branches, twigs and phragmites are harvested by hand, each bringing its own character to the process. Some are straight and rigid, others bent, twisted or forked, with unexpected textures and colours. Phragmites are more linear and structured, with a tonal quality and rhythm of their own. I'm drawn to these differences and the possibilities they create.

The material is trimmed, sorted and separated by hand into groups of similar size and character, then aged and dried. It becomes the medium for compositions built from a library of lines, shapes, textures and tones.

My background as a graphic designer finds its way into the work. I think about line, rhythm, repetition, scale, balance, composition and negative space, but instead of drawing these elements on a surface, I construct them in space. Layers of natural material create depth and subtle dimension, turning a familiar visual language into something sculptural.

Light completes the work. As daylight moves across the surface, the pieces cast shifting shadows and reveal different layers. At night, interior lighting creates another experience altogether. The work is never quite the same from one moment to the next.
